Sourcing

Our project examines the factors that influence happiness levels across countries by mainly using the 2020 World Happiness Report dataset. This dataset tracked the average Cantril Ladder Happiness Score across 153 countries, as well as tracked 6 explanatory numerical variables: logged GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, the freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. The dataset, what it includes, and its limitations are discussed in greater depth in the data tab, which contains our data critique.

In addition to our primary source of the 2020 World Happiness Report Dataset, we also utilized a wide range of secondary sources in the form of research papers from academic journals. We found these sources with the help of academic search engines, such as JSTOR and the UCLA Library Search. These sources helped us to not only explain what we saw in the data (for instance, why there is a general positive relationship between logged GDP per capita and happiness), but to also help explain what the dataset could not explain, such as how cultural factors like religion and language can effect ideas and feelings of happiness, as well as exploring other ways happiness has been measured (like Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness Index).

Processing

For our project, we accessed the 2020 World Happiness Report Dataset through Google Sheets, as it was provided through the Bruinlearn Site and downloaded it as a .csv file. Data cleaning was essentially little to none as the World Happiness Report 2020 dataset is already compiled from other datasets and was essentially completely clean as there were no missing or N/A values for the parts of the dataset we used for our narrative. Therefore, we were able to use the data as was to make visualizations and findings.

For our data visualizations, we heavily utilized Tableau, as its types of graphs included maps, bar charts, and scatterplots. Therefore, given it’s versatility and official endorsement in our class, we decided to utilize it for the data visualizations across our narrative.

Presentation

In order to maximize control over design, we started drafting on Figma using the UI/UX process of brainstorming, identifying pain points, establishing a color palette and typography, and transitioning from low-fidelity wireframes to high-fidelity ones. We later utilized Cursor to transition these frames into working HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Eventually, we were able to publish our work onto Cloudflare. A neutral, high-contrast, and limited color palette was used to keep attention on necessary elements while maintaining softness and accessibility.

We shared our data visualizations on the website by publishing our data visualizations from Tableau onto Tableau public and pressing the share button to get HTML code that would embed it onto the website.

Finally, we also utilized a timeline in order to better present the history of how happiness has been measured and what factors people have thought influenced it. We utilized Timeline.js to create the timeline as it allowed us to effectively add text and images to enhance the timeline, as well as the fact that it was the timeline website our whole group was most experienced and comfortable in using.

Anish Saraswat

Project Manager


Hi! I’m Anish, a third year statistics/data science major and accounting minor student at UCLA. As the project manager of our group, I was responsible for reminding my group of deadlines, delegating tasks appropriately, setting up meeting times, and overall just making sure our project was completed in a smooth and timely manner. In addition to contributing to the data critique and annotated bibliography, I also contributed by helping with the home page writing, the sourcing/processing/presentation write up, and the writing and visualizations of the first question of the narrative, which discusses the happiest/unhappiest countries and regions according to the dataset. This dataset especially interested me as I am highly interested in learning more about different countries and why even something we think is so simple, like happiness, can differ greatly across different regions.

Hi! I am a Psychobiology major at UCLA interested in bridging the gap between my academic background with designing interfaces and data visualizations. For this project, I focused on which explanatory factors explain world happiness the most. Designed through Figma, I transitioned from creating a distinct color palette, typography, and page flow all the way into high-fidelity wireframes. Additionally, I used Adobe Stock and my own photos that I took when implementing images. Eventually, I utilized Cursor to help code my designs, make subtle changes, implement visualizations, and publish the website on Cloudflare.

Hello! I am currently a Sociology major with a minor in Digital Humanities. For this project, I served as a content specialist. I created a data visualization examining the factors most strongly associated with life evaluation scores and contributed to the project’s narrative by answering our fifth question. I also helped format and organize the website to make the information clear and visually engaging. Overall, my role focused on making various different elements of this project work together in a clear and cohesive way.

Hi! I am a Data Science and Business Economics double major at UCLA, with a minor in Entrepreneurship. I got interested in this project because of what happens when you take something personal like well-being and turn it into one number that countries can be ranked with. My part of the site is about the countries the World Happiness Report gets wrong, meaning the ones that report way more or way less happiness than its six variables say they should. I did the outlier analysis and made the graph, and I brought in the sources on income, inequality, and life evaluation.

For this project I worked on the outlier analysis and made the graphs to visualize that gap. I also brought in the sources on income inequality and life evaluation to help explain what the numbers were and weren't capturing. I also contributed to the annotated bibliography. I'm passionate about using data to identify patterns, solve problems, and drive meaningful insights. Through both academic and professional experiences, I've developed strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills that allow me to collaborate effectively in fast paced environments.
